Zoning Handbook

Tree Protection

The tree protection regulations apply only in designated zones and are intended to:

  • Preserve mature trees in the District to the maximum extent possible;
  • Prevent adverse impacts on open space, parkland, stream beds, or other environmentally sensitive natural areas that can result from loss of tree cover; and
  • Encourage improved air quality and stormwater control that result from mature tree cover.

The tree protection regulations are not to be construed to relieve a property owner of their obligation to comply with the provisions of the Urban Forest Preservation Act of 2002, as administered by the Urban Forestry Administration within the District Department of Transportation, and the regulations in Chapter 37 of the Public Space and Safety Regulations, Title 24 DCMR.
